How-to guide

Risk register

This is organisational risk (the minibus becoming unroadworthy, not what could go wrong on one trip), scored before your current controls and again after, so a trustees' meeting can see exactly what those controls are actually worth.

  1. It's organisational risk, not activity risk

The Risk Register covers top-level risks to the organisation: financial, legal, governance and external, distinct from an activity risk assessment, which is about what could go wrong on one specific trip or session.

  2. Give it a real owner

Risk owner is a picker, not free text: choose from your adult volunteers, or from general contacts (a trustee who doesn't have a Scout Suite login, for instance). Can't find them? + Add new contact creates one inline without leaving the form.

  3. Score before controls, then after

Set the pre-control impact and likelihood, add what's already in place as Current controls, then set the post-control score once those controls are accounted for. Scout Suite calculates both scores for you.

  4. Review and export for the meeting

A colour-coded band shows at a glance what needs attention. Reviewing it takes one click, and the whole register exports as a PDF ready for a trustees' meeting.

The register sits alongside the trustee report and declarations of interest: see Trustees and governance.
