How-to guide

Signing in with your organisation

Some organisations let their people sign in with the account they already use for work or school. This guide is for members. The steps for setting it up are in [Setting up single sign-on](/guides/setting-up-sso).

  1. Start with your email address

On the sign-in page, press Sign in with your organisation's single sign-on. Enter your work or school email address and press Continue.

Scout Suite checks which sign-in your organisation uses for that address. It then offers Continue with your organisation's sign-in by name. If your organisation uses Microsoft 365, it offers Continue with Microsoft instead, and the steps are in Signing in with Microsoft.

If the page says your organisation hasn't set up single sign-on, sign in with your email and password, your passkey or a linked account, as you do now.

  2. Signing in does not give you access

Signing in with your organisation's account only shows Scout Suite who you are. It doesn't add you to a Group, District or County, and it doesn't give you a role. People still join through an invitation or a role, as they do now.

  3. Your first sign-in

If no Scout Suite account has your email address yet, Scout Suite creates one when you sign in. The new account has no access to anything until someone invites you or gives you a role.

  4. If you already have an account

If you already have a Scout Suite account with the same email address, and that address is verified, Scout Suite links the two accounts when you sign in. You don't get a second account, and Scout Suite emails you to say the sign-in was linked.

  5. The verified-email rule

Scout Suite only creates or links an account for an email address at a domain your organisation has verified for that sign-in. For any other address, the sign-in is refused and nothing is created.

If you already have an account with that email address, and you haven't verified it, the page says so. Sign in your usual way, verify your email address from the email Scout Suite sends you, and then try single sign-on again.

If your Scout Suite email address is different from your organisation's address, see the next step.

  6. Link single sign-on from your profile

Your Scout Suite email address doesn't need to change. Go to Profile → Security, find Link single sign-on, enter your organisation's email address and press Check.

Scout Suite shows the sign-in your organisation uses for that address. Press Link and sign in with your organisation's account. Scout Suite links the two accounts and emails you to say so. You keep signing in your usual way too.

You can only start a link while you're signed in, and only if you signed in within the last day. If Scout Suite asks you to sign in again, do that, then start again.

If that address signs in with Microsoft, use Connect Microsoft on the same page instead.

  7. If your organisation requires sign-in

Your organisation may ask you to sign in with its account before you can use it. When it does, Scout Suite shows a page called Link your account to continue, which says which account is needed and why.

Choose Link on the page, or go to Profile → Security and link single sign-on as described above. Sign in with your organisation's account, then go back to the organisation.

If the organisation asks you to sign in again, do so with the same account you normally use. Scout Suite checks that it is the same person.

Your other organisations and your family portal keep working. If an admin has excused you, you will not see this page.

  8. Disconnect single sign-on

To stop signing in through your organisation, go to Profile → Security. Under Connected accounts, select the X beside the single sign-on account, then confirm. You can only disconnect it if you have another way to sign in, so set a password or add a passkey first if it's your only one.

Signing in with single sign-on again links the account again, as long as your Scout Suite email address is still at a domain your organisation has verified.

  9. Signing in again

Some organisations ask you to sign in again with their single sign-on every so often, for example every 7 days. When that happens, Scout Suite shows Sign in again with and the name of your organisation's sign-in. Press it and sign in with your organisation's account, as you did the first time.

Sign in with the same account you use for Scout Suite. If you sign in with a different Scout Suite account, it doesn't count, and you'll still need to sign in again yourself.

Scout Suite asks your organisation to check your password again, and Google, Okta and Microsoft Entra do. If an organisation's sign-in ignores that request, it may sign you in from a session that is still open. An account your organisation has turned off can't sign in at all, so you'll stay blocked until you can.
