How-to guide
Young Leaders
Young Leaders help run Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. They're older than the section by design, so its age range doesn't apply to them, but they're still under 18. Here's how to add them, what the section's leaders can see, and where the Group Lead Volunteer finds them all.
Watch this on its own pageWho can be a Young Leader
POR defines a Young Leader as "an Explorer aged between 13½ and their 18th birthday who is working with a Squirrel, Beaver, Cub or Scout Section Team". They stay in their Explorer section and help in a younger one too.
Young Leaders are under 18, so they only ever have supervised access to young people. Nobody can help before 13½, and at 18 they help as an adult volunteer from the Team page instead.
Add an Explorer from the section they help
Open the section, for example your Cubs, and press Add a Young Leader. The An Explorer tab lists the Group's Explorers and anyone else old enough, including people already in another section. Pick them and press Add as Young Leader.
The Cubs age range doesn't apply, and they stay in their Explorer section. They appear under Young Leaders on the section's member list.
Or from their Explorer section
On the Explorer section's member list, press the arrows next to their name (Move or set as linking) and choose the younger section. Scout Suite spots that it's a younger section and offers Add as Young Leader.
Set as linking is for joining a section, so it holds them to that section's age range. That's why linking an Explorer into Cubs says they're too old for Cubs.
An Explorer from another Unit
If their record belongs to a standalone Explorer Unit, the Unit shares it with your Group first. They then show in the An Explorer list marked Shared by and the Unit's name. Sharing a member with another group covers sharing.
Helpers who aren't Explorers
Someone helping for a while who isn't an Explorer, typically for the Duke of Edinburgh's Award or a Girlguiding award, isn't a Young Leader. POR says "other 14-17 Helpers (typically helping as part of DofE, Girlguiding or similar) are not a member of Scouts", so Scout Suite calls them a Helper, with what they're volunteering for, such as Helper (DofE).
In Scotland POR has a role for them: "The Young Helper role applies only in Scotland." A Group under a Scottish Region shows them as a Young Helper, with a reminder that 16 and 17 year olds must be cleared to volunteer by the UK Headquarters Safeguarding Team (PVG).
To add one, press Add a Young Leader and choose the Not in Scouts (DofE, Girlguiding) tab. Enter their name and date of birth, what they're volunteering for, contact details if you have them, and when they finish if you know. Scout Suite makes them a record in the Group for their emergency contacts and medical details, and adds them to the section.
What the section's leaders see
Young Leaders and helpers are on the section's member list like anyone else, and their name opens their record, with their contacts and medical details. The section's In Touch export includes them, marked Young Leader, Young Helper or Helper.
They count towards the section's capacity like any young person, and section planning knows they leave when they turn 18 or on the date they finish.
A Team Leader sees the records of the Young Leaders in their own sections, not every Explorer in the Group.
Every Young Leader in the Group
Young Leaders in the Group menu lists every Young Leader and helper, the sections they help in, and their own section or the Unit that shared them. Each name opens their record.
The Group Lead Volunteer sees everyone. A Team Leader sees the ones in their own sections.
GroupsWhen they finish
Press the calendar next to their name to set Helping until, or the cross to take them off the section. Their record and their Explorer section aren't changed.
